It would seem to me consumers buying from the source would help keep the public in touch with the processes that brought the food to their tables. Which isn't something most of them really want. Besides, isn't that why we regulate the food sector, to ensure that those who produce the food are doing things in a safe, humane and ecofriendly manner? It isn't just government which regulates the food sector, non-governmental organisations can also create certification standards. I would suggest reading reason.com/archives/2002/09/25/i-dont-care-where-my-food-come for more on this. Could they scale up to the level we'd need them to? Somehow I doubt it. Aquaculture is probably the better bet for seafood (seafood production is going to be increasing, if we're to avoid overfishing the oceans we'll need an almost complete switch to aquaculture).
