To kick this board off you may want to listen to David Attenborough's lecture on population and growth. I hope it promotes some discussion on this important topic.

Great video. I like the the line about the only people who believe in perpetual growth are mad men and economists.

Great video. I like the the line about the only people who believe in perpetual growth are mad men and economists. He left out those who understand just how many resources Earth and the rest of the universe really have.

Not to be disrespectful Anon but I think you are operating in science fiction mode. The biosphere really is a limit and our taking down so many other species is a red flag on our own future.

We're also making some progress towards fixing some of the problems.
The air and water in developed countries is cleaner than it used to be, the streets are no longer filled with horse manure (did you know that people used to be worried that they were reaching the limit as to how much horse s*** a city could handle, a limit to growth of its day) and some species are actually coming back from the brink of extinction.
Whatever the ultimate limit on how much economic activity Earth can support is we're not close to it, we only appear to be close when you restrict yourself to only using technology which isn't the best we have right now and state that we will never become a space based civilisation (which creates new biospheres).
