www.economist.com/node/21556798Makes for an interesting read ... it's about the effects of climate change in the Arctic and their political and economic implications. The report acknowledges that the Arctic meltdown is a serious environmental problem, but it also puts an emphasis on the advantages a largely ice-free Arctic offers to the surrounding nations. According to the report, positive feedback mechanism are causing a much more rapid thawing than predicted by models, which could lead to the disappearance of summer ice much earlier than expected. It states, however, that the risk of reaching further tipping points, for example methane release from melting permafrost, is rather low.
