Drax: UK power station owner cuts down primary forests in Canada. Nature is pretty poor at collecting solar energy in the form of wood. However it is pretty good at polymerising the carbon, which allows us to add commercial value. Dried wood [CH2O] has a combustion value of ~15 MJ/kg. When saturated with (nonfossil) hydrogen each kilogram becomes a smaller mass of liquid hydrocarbon [CH2] of combustion value ~20 MJ. With an energy density of ~42 MJ/kg, the liquid hydrocarbon has far greater commercial value than either the wood or the hydrogen that created it. The renewables movement is morally crippled by its failure to provide storage, providing empty promises while it covertly relies on fossil fuels for infill. If instead, it created synthetic fuels such as above, its problem of storage would be solved. Its mantra then could more honestly promise "renewables plus synfuel". I suspect that nuclear electricity could produce the hydrogen (or extract the oxygen) more efficiently than wind or solar. Engineers would approve, but it is not clear whether the public would be as attracted to the alternative mantra of "nuclear plus synfuel".
