EROEI, Energy Returned On Energy Invested

The energy used to prepare the so-called fossil fuel for use is not considered to be beneficial, in the accounting sense. So the result is a rather low EROEI.

Doubts that ERoI is useful.

   When cherry picked facts do not fit the agenda ... change the metric to something different. Anything different.

   I only skimmed the article and that much was a waste of my time.
