I'd love to see what this really cost, and what 100% renewable means. Are they going off grid, or are they going to be cowards and buy in coal when they need it? (Like every night). "Another Australian town making the shift to clean power! Newstead in Victoria will soon be powered entirely by the sun - the Victorian town is planning to convert to 100% clean power by 2017. LIKE & SHARE to congratulate regional communities like Newstead and Uralla that are leading the way on renewables." The text in the link reads as if composed by a salesman for the renewables industry. Or should I say "gas industry" -- echoing the weasel phrase "clean energy" does rather give the game away. The 100% bit means that when the sun shines high overhead, the town powers from its solar and dumps excess power out into the surrounding grid. As clouds come and go, the fluctuating power is balanced by intermittent revving of gas turbines elsewhere on the grid. As the sun drops low in the sky, brown coal generators elsewhere in Victoria flood power equivalent to the excess back into the town. Starry-eyed Facebook users all over town settle in for the night, content that their elders have taken care of their future.
